About us
UCAN has been set up as a charity dedicated to raising awareness of urological cancers, and improving support and quality of life for people and families who are affected.
It will do this by creating a centre of excellence in the north of Scotland to spearhead a vigorous programme.
Why?
1 in 5
men in North Scotland will be diagnosed with a urological cancer.
1 in 3
men with prostate cancers in Scotland are diagnosed too late with advanced cancer that can no longer be cured.
c. 1,500 people
in North of Scotland are diagnosed with a urological cancer every year and 500 die each year.
They are 3 times
more likely to be cured if cancer is diagnosed early.
Since we began
UCAN Centre
This Centre is the first of its kind in Scotland and provides friendly, welcoming environment for patients and relatives with opportunities for browsing educational and comprehensive material. It offers a chance to simply relax over a cup of coffee and share with others in a similar position as well as a private area for discussion with medical staff and specialist nurses.
Robotic Surgery
Thanks to all your fundraising and support from the Scottish Government with a £1 million investment, Scotland’s first robotic surgery is now available in Aberdeen. The ultra-modern robot which surgeons can use to perform minimally invasive surgery, will initially be used for prostate cancer cases but in the future can be used in cases involving bladder and bowel cancer.

SURE Appeal
We’ve teamed up with Friends of ANCHOR on a joint £2.5m fundraising appeal to create a clinical unit designed to improve diagnosis times for urological cancers.
The SURE Unit, formerly the Rapid Diagnostic Centre (RDC), will be located within Aberdeen Royal Infirmary and will enable more people with a suspected urological cancer to be seen quicker, and to have all their scans and diagnostic tests carried out during a single visit to hospital.
The unit’s name is an acronym for Swift Urological Response and Evaluation. Plans for the unit, which includes a fit-out, new services and extra staffing, are not currently covered by the NHS, prompting UCAN and Friends of ANCHOR to step in.
